David Johnston and his family returned to West Plains in August of 2008. He had been doing web site design for the past 14 years and found the market for such a business very open in Howell County. As David was scouting out his resources, he came into the South Central Workforce Investment Board (SCWIB) office at the right time. The SCWIB was just launching their partnership with MSU’s Small Business Technical and Development Center to run the FastTrac Entrepreneurial classes. David applied and was accepted as a student into the class.
David states, “This course, which is designed for entrepreneurs starting small businesses, has been invaluable to me. The instructor, Russell Wyrick, has done an excellent job in preparing us towards our business endeavors. Russell’s outstanding instruction combined with the very thorough curriculum has helped to broaden our scope, and make known other possibilities not otherwise discovered. I appreciate so much what this course has accomplished for my new business so far.”
David started the business in his home and now has an office with two employees. He also sub-contracts some work out to two other individuals. David already has several accounts and his work can be seen on his web site at www.drjdesigns.net. David says he looks forward to investing back into the West Plains community through his business as it expands. If you are interested in hiring David he can be reached at 417-274-2918 or his office address is 1528 Imperial Center, West Plains.
Interview with
David Johnston
Q. When you first found out about the Incubator, what was your initial assessment?
A. I was very excited to think that there was going to be a place right here in WP that would become a tremendous resource for small businesses like mine.
Q. What do you believe the Incubator will do for the West Plains area?
A. I believe it will give entrepreneurs a wonderful jump start for their business. Not only will it offer office space at very affordable costs, but the number of resources available will be tremendous assets to their business as well.
Q. You have contributed to this project. Would you like to explain your part?
A. Certainly. I was asked some time ago to comprise a list of those things I felt important for the Incubator to offer from a Small Business point of view. I was then later asked to build a website for www.ozsbi.com along with Gene Weinbeck of Fundraiser Software. It has been a privilege to be able to be a part of the Ozarks Small Business Incubator.
